Digestive Disorders – Embarrassing, Aren’t they?

It is very difficult for us to discuss these sorts of problems. Not the sort of thing you chat with your friends about over coffee, or even share with your partner. Just to let you know that I have also been very poorly with IBS in the past, so I do understand. My job is to immediately put you at your ease, so we can discuss your issues openly and honestly and obviously in complete confidence. I want to reassure you that these issues can be resolved when you heal your gut … by removing inflammatory foodstuffs from your diet.

Digestive Disorders

Are you suffering from stomach ache, flatulence, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhoea? If so, then you may have a recently named (but very common) disorder called Leaky Gut Syndrome.

Inflammation In The Gut

All our good bacteria which make up our microbiome should reside in our lower gut, namely part of our large intestine or colon. Our upper gut, or small intestine, should be relatively sterile. A poor diet, dominated by too many carbohydrates, results in fermenting microbes in the upper gut and an imbalance in our microbiome. These microbes should not be there, they are toxic to our system resulting in the immune system going into overdrive sending inflammatory proteins into our bloodstream.

Leaky Gut Syndrome

One of the many jobs of a healthy microbiome is to protect and maintain the integrity of our gut wall. If our microbiome becomes damaged then the tight chain of cells that make up our gut wall break down, forming gaps in our gut lining. Unfortunately, these gaps in our delicate gut wall, make it more permeable and the critical barrier between our gut and the rest of our body is broken, allowing toxic substances from our gut into our bloodstream.

A damaged microbiome therefore results in not only inflammatory proteins but other toxic substances leaking into our blood, travelling to every cell in our body, including our brain. This increased intestinal permeability, resulting in an overactive immune system and chronic inflammation, has been linked to an increase in many of our 21st century physical and mental health conditions. I think everyone of us, if we haven’t been consciously protecting our microbiome, is suffering from a bit of leaky gut.

Resulting Gut Disorders

Leaky gut, if left untreated can lead to digestive disorders such as as IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), or more seriously IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) such as Crohn’s, Diverticulitis, or Ulcerative Colitis. Leaky Gut is also linked to brain health; if you have fermenting microbes in the gut it is very likely that you will have fermenting microbes in your brain.

The Solution

Fortunately, if we catch Leaky Gut early enough, we can resolve these distressing disorders. Even if you have been diagnosed with a gut condition then changes to your diet can help to suppress and control the symptoms. Please do not ignore these symptoms, do something about it now while you can by getting in touch.
